When I started climbing I learned that there is basically just one way of increasing grip – that’s chalk. I’ve heard about liquid versions but never seen them actually be used so I stayed away from them.
While browsing twitter on a lonely and boring night I stumbled upon @LiquidGripUK’s tweet, which someone had re-tweeted. Something about weight lifting, rocks, amazing. I browsed the site and they made all sort of promises and great grip lasting for at least 2 hours and not being messy in anyway. I ordered a piece and got around testing it yesterday at a local climbing gym.
I applied a small amount to my hand and did what the instructions said. It left some amount “dried” chalk in to my hands as the liquid chalks usually do. I went off with bouldering and the grip was great and I did not need to reapply for an hour or so. Thats one tick for LiquidGrip, it works while bouldering. But it’s usually short timed so what happens if I go on a longer route?
I chose a 12 meter wall and went off. It hold the sweat fairly well and after few ascents my hands where still dry, but on the fourth-fifthish I noticed that the sweat was seeping through and I could feel my grip loosing. I reapplied and it was the same thing. I’m unsure if it helps that you wash your hands prior to reapplying but that can be rather inconvenient when outdoors.
Conclusion. I like this product and you can reinforce the effect with regular chalk if you happen to loose your grip while in the middle of the route. Please note, I Sweat A Lot! It’s in superhuman levels and I can sweep of sweat by the gallons when I climb but I still had much better grip with this than regular chalk. Price wise it’s around 9,99 pounds (that is about 13 euros) add few pounds for shipping costs. You can find liquid chalk for around 10 euros, though I have not compared these two products together.
Final conclusion. Try it, test it and see how you like. I’ll get this small bottle through and see if I order more and I got to get this product outdoors as well (hoping for a few days of sunshine!).
